25 Skincare Makeup Hybrids That Pair Complexion and Skin-Friendly Benefits

Razzano continues that these hybrid beauty products are trending right now thanks to consumers educating themselves on product benefits through social media and increased retailer guidance. “People want makeup that performs to the standards they expect and is going to help improve their skin along the way.” So, it’s no surprise that Sephora is seeing a growing fan base of this product category. To help inform your buy, we’ve tapped our experts and our personal beauty trials to curate this assortment of products that blur the lines between makeup and skin care. Read on to discover our edit—along with some helpful ingredient callouts and resulting benefits.
Are skin-care makeup hybrids worth it?
When celebrity makeup artist Nicole Bueno was asked if skin-care makeup hybrids worth it, she responded with a resounding yes. “It’s been said a million times, but the better the canvas, the better the art. So many factors lead up to a beautiful makeup application, one of the main being the condition of the skin,” she says. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi reminds us that while makeup products with skincare benefits can be worth the investment, they should not be relied upon as replacement for a skin-care regimen. “Their effectiveness depends on several factors, including the formulation, the concentration of active ingredients, and an individual’s specific skin concerns. Many cosmetic products infused with skin-care ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and peptides, can provide hydration, protection, and mild treatment benefits,” she explains.
Does makeup with skin-care benefits actually work?
Bueno believes skincare in makeup works, but agrees with Dr. Shirazi, in that it shouldn’t take the place of your actual regular skincare routine. Dr. Shirazi explains that makeup infused with skin-care can indeed work to a certain extent, particularly when they feature clinically-proven ingredients such as niacinamide for brightening, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and SPF for sun protection. However, the efficacy of these ingredients is often limited by how long the product stays on the skin and how well the active ingredients are delivered. “Ultimately, while makeup with skin-care benefits can be helpful, I personally favor skincare with makeup benefits as the primary intention is focused on the skin,” says Dr. Shirazi.
In order to see the long-term benefits of both product categories, Bueno reminds us the importance of properly cleansing at the end of each day. “Make sure you double-cleanse properly every night, and follow it up with your regular nightly skincare routine. You don’t want to have a build-up of product on the skin. Even if you skip makeup and only wear sunscreen you should be double cleansing, as sunscreen can build up on the skin and cause breakouts as well if not removed properly,” she explains.
